Oggi vi voglio parlare del libro “Il potere del cane” di Thomas Savage autore che ho apprezzato molto, per il modo in cui descrive gli incantevoli paesaggi western e come ogni personaggio viene raccontato, descrivendo ciò che vive nel profondo.

Questo concetto è stato ripreso nell’omonimo film di Jane Campion interpretato da Benedict Cumberbatch, candidato all’Oscar di quest’anno come miglior attore protagonista e che è tra gli attori british che preferisco, forse per il suo infallibile accento, ma che sa anche distinguersi in ruoli drammatici e difficili come già dimostrato in altri film come in “The Imitation Game”, “Il visionario mondo di Louis Wain” (dove anche qui il tè sarà protagonista nelle scene più importanti e drammatiche assieme ai suoi gatti psicadelici) fino ad “Edison – l’uomo che illuminò il mondo”.

George e Phil sono due fratelli che possiedono un ranch nel Montana e pur essendo totalmente diversi, George è succube del carisma del fratello che non approverà la decisione del fratello di sposare la vedova Rose. Questo sarà il pretesto per Phil per tormentare la donna fino a farla arrivare all’alcolismo e manipolare il giovane figlio Peter. Phil soffre di un comportamento narcisistico di abbandono in cui non accetta una parte di sè, ovvero la sua omosessualità nascosta e latente.

Il testo è molto scorrevole, essenziale ma ti cala perfettamente all’interno della psicologia di ogni singolo personaggio. Nel film seppur notevole lo sviluppo è minore ma comunque di impatto nel dare una certa sensazione di ansia e drammaticità.

Sia nel film che nel libro, il tè accompagna i protagonisti in momenti complessi o di solitudine, tematica base dove ognuno di loro fa i conti con il proprio vuoto interiore, che può essere rappresentato da un lutto o da una separazione, dalla non accettazione di sé stessi fino all’alcolismo.

Il tè caratterizza il momento in cui Peter trova il corpo del padre suicida, ed è in quel momento che Rose sta preparando un infuso e ritornerà per unire lei e George in un amore che nasce dalle rispettive vulnerabilità.

A questa opera ho pensato che un buon tè nero forte e intenso potesse essere indicato, di quei tè neri che sono un po’ terrosi, proprio come le praterie western, in cui sorseggiandolo si immaginano paesaggi dalle montagne sconfinate e i cavalli che corrono nel ranch.

Dog power and tea that dispels sadness

Today I want to talk to you about the book “The power of the dog” by Thomas Savage, author that I really appreciated, for the way he describes the enchanting western landscapes and how each character is told, describing what lives deep inside.

This concept was taken up in Jane Campion’s film of the same name starring Benedict Cumberbatch, nominated for this year’s Academy Award for Best Actor and who is one of my favorite British actors, perhaps for his infallible accent, but who also knows stand out in dramatic and difficult roles as already demonstrated in other movies such as “The Imitation Game”, “The visionary world of Louis Wain” (where even here tea will be the protagonist in the most important and dramatic scenes together with his psychedelic cats) up to “Edison – the man who enlightened the world”.

George and Phil are two brothers who own a ranch in Montana and despite being totally different, George is under the influence of his brother who will not approve of his brother decision to marry the widow Rose. This will be the pretext for Phil to torment the woman until she leads to alcoholism and to manipulate young son Peter. Phil suffers from a narcissistic abandonment behavior in which he does not accept a part of himself, namely his hidden and latent homosexuality.

The text is very fluent, essential but fits you perfectly into the psychology of each individual character. In the film, although notable, the development is minor but still impactful in giving a certain feeling of anxiety and drama.

Both in the film and in the book, tea accompanies the protagonists in difficult moments or in solitude, a basic theme where each of them comes to terms with their own inner emptiness, which can be represented by a bereavement or a separation, by the non-acceptance of themselves to alcoholism.

Tea characterizes the moment when Peter finds his father’s suicidal body, and it is at that moment that Rose is preparing an infusion and will return to unite her and George in a love born of their respective vulnerabilities.

In this work I thought that a good strong and intense black tea could be indicated, by those black tea ones that are a bit earthy just like the western prairies in which, sipping it, you imagine landscapes of boundless mountains and horses running around the ranch.
